Penelope Carr performing, Put on a Happy Face - Pro-Am Dance Studio, Hallandale, Florida

My first rectial, 3 years old. I can still remember how much that crinoline skirt itched. Anyway, I trained for over 20 years in ballet, tap, jazz, and acrobatics. I've taught dance, gymnastics, and acrobatics as well.

That's me, middle left, the one with the biggest smile. Just happy to be doing what I love.

My first lead dancer position. Yes, I know that headpiece was a lot, and it was top heavy, too. Imagine having to come down those stairs quickly without dropping your chin, and if I kicked any higher than you see there, I'd break feathers off.

Passing the Torch

I retired from performing professionally when I had my daughter, Sarah. I began coaching her when she started taking dance lessons. She switched to aerial when she was 12. She trained with Cassie Sandou in silk and lyra, and she trained in hand balancing and contortion with Marika Delibaldova.

Sarah was invited to compete in a national aerial competition when she was 14. I helped her with her musicality, her body positioning & transitions, and her stage presence. I made her costumes, too. She competed in the 12-14 age division in both silk and lyra. She won 1st place in both, and she won best all around, out of around 100 other competetitors. Not too shabby.

My daughter, Sarah Carr - National award winning aerialist, 14 years old.

A friend suggested the aerial classes that started all of this. I had Sarah try lyra first because I knew silk required a lot more upper body strength and endurance. After her initial class, I asked her if she liked it. I honestly thought she might not because wrapping yourself around that metal circle hurts, and you get a lot of bruises. "YES! I love it!" she said. She began taking lyra classes once a week. I waited 2-3 months before putting her into silk classes so she had time to develop her upper body strength. Maybe I understood this from teaching gymnastics or just watching beginners take silk class for the first time. Ten minutes into class, and their arms were exhausted, and they really could do much for the rest of the class. That can be really discouraging. So, there's an insider tip if you haven't thought of it already.

Sarah Carr, 14 years old. - My pride and joy.

One thing that I noticed while she was competing is that she has nerves of steel. You couldn't see a smiggin of nervousness on her face during her routines. I mean, look at her face. Completely relaxed as she drops. I won't take credit for that. That was her ability to focus, which comes from a combination of a strong mind and passion. She is a much better performer than I was at that age. I didn't have an experienced mentor guiding me, though. Oh, okay... I'll take a tiny bit of credit.

Sarah Carr, making the cut for Cirque du Soleil, at 18 years old.

FUNNY STORY: When Sarah was learning this part in the show, there is a moment when she swings from one side of the stage to the other from 40-50 feet up, no net. She said the first time she swung, it was so high, so fast and so scary, she screamed the whole way across, LOL.

So yeah, I struggled to break into the industry, and then when I finally did, it was with an awkward thud. Once Sarah showed an interest in performing professionally, I was determined to make sure she was prepared and that she didn't make the same mistakes that I and so many other newbies make. I know now that my lack of preparation when I broke into the industry made it a lot harder for me, and my career could have been better and longer with the right guidance, and that's why I created the courses, and that's my backstory.
